Description |
Amoxicillin is the sodium salt of amoxicillin and a penicillin antibiotic. Its pharmacological action is the same as that of amoxicillin. Its mechanism of action is to inhibit the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. The target molecule is the penicillin binding protein PBPs on the cell wall. Some PBPs belong to self Lysozyme Chemicalbook, once activated, the enzyme will cause bacterial cell lysis. By inhibiting these PBPs, the bacteria deform and cell division are delayed. This process occurs during the reproduction period of bacterial cells. Therefore, this type of drug is a bactericidal agent during the reproduction period. And it is toxic to animal cells without cell walls. |
Function |
Amoxicillin is used in the treatment of a number of infections, including acute otitis media, streptococcal pharyngitis, pneumonia, skin infections, urinary tract infections, Salmonella infections, Lyme disease, and chlamydia infections. It is also used to prevent bacterial endocarditis in high-risk people having dental work done, to prevent streptpcpccus pneumoniae and other encapsulated bacterial infections in those without spleens, such as people with sickle-cell disease, and for both the prevention and the treatment of anthrax. The United Kingdom recommends against its use for infectious endocarditis prophylaxis. These recommendations have not appeared to have changed the rates of infection for infectious endocarditis. |
