Acyclovir, 9-[2-(hydroxyethoxy)methyl]-9H-guanine (Zovirax),is the most effective of a series of acyclic nucleosidesthat possess antiviral activity. In contrast with true nucleosidesthat have a ribose or a deoxyribose sugar attached to apurine or a pyrimidine base, the group attached to the basein acyclovir is similar to an open chain sugar, albeit lackingin hydroxyl groups. The clinically useful antiviral spectrumof acyclovir is limited to herpesviruses. It is most active (invitro) against HSV type 1, about two times less against HSVtype 2, and 10 times less potent against varicella-zostervirus (VZV). 

Function 

Acyclovir is an antiviral drug. It slows the growth and spread of the  in the body. Acyclovir will not cure herpes, but it can lessen the symptoms of the infection.

Acyclovir injection is used to treat severe infections caused by , including severe forms of genital herpes, shingles, herpes encephalitis (swelling of the brain), and herpes infections in people with other diseases that weaken the immune system.

Application 

Aciclovir is a synthetic purine nucleoside analogue. It is mainly used for various infections caused by herpes simplex virus and can be used for primary or recurrent skin, mucous membrane, external genital infections and HSV infections occurring in immunodeficient individuals. 
It is the drug of choice for the treatment of HSV encephalitis, and is superior to adenosine in reducing morbidity and mortality. It can also be used for herpes zoster, EBV, and varicella infections in immunodeficient individuals. Topical use is for skin only, and acyclovir has low skin absorption.
