Deciduous shrubs or trees, up to 12m tall, milky. Leaves alternate, thickly membranous, broadly ovate or subglobose, 10 -- 20cm long,3 -- 5 palmately deeply lobed, rarely unlobed, margin undulate teeth, coarse above, short hairs below. Inflorescence Chemicalbook receptacle short peduncle, solitary in leaf axils; Male flowers on upper part of inner face of gall receptacle, stamens 3; Female flowers in another inflorescence receptacle. Polyfruit-pear shaped, black purple when ripe; Achene ovate, pale brownish yellow. Flowering April ~ May, fruiting September ~ October.

Function
Ficin is an enzyme preparation. Mainly used for cold resistance of beer (hydrolyze protein in beer to avoid turbidity caused by cold storage); Meat softening (hydrolyzing muscle protein and collagen to tenderize meat); Dough conditioner for baking; Emulsion coagulant (instead of rennet) used in cheese manufacture. The shell of the shrimp can be separated from the meat to achieve mechanized husking, and the clam meat can be separated from the viscera.
